Mattias Gustavsson, June 3, 2009
I came across this and thought I'd share: It's a free retro games magazine in pdf format, and there's five issues available from here:

SMB Minus World

Took me about 5 tries to get there, then when I got the screen recorder running I kept on dying or running out of time.
I had to take 3 different screen-casts before I finally was able to play through and make it through the glitch in time!
That was fun.
Megaman 2.5D - 2D AND 3D
Mattias Gustavsson, May 31, 2009Peter Sjöstrand is working on this cool little game:
It is a Megaman platformer, mixing 2D and 3D elements and gameplay. And it looks like it is going to work out really nice - check out this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6KMAm_228s
Ivory Springs - Oldschool platform goodness
Mattias Gustavsson, May 30, 2009Joakim "Konjak" Sandberg have recently shared this little nugget:
It is a nice little platformer he was working on a couple of years ago, but abandoned in favor of other projects. Now he's released it as is, so there's some glitches and it's not complete, but still worth checking out.
You can read more and download it here: http://www.konjak.org/section.php?section=ivory
Droid Assault - Great retro-styled shooter
Mattias Gustavsson, May 28, 2009Puppy Games have just released a new update of one of their great games, providing me with the perfect opportunity to bring it to your attention:
Droid Assault is a modern retro arcade shooter, inspired by games like Paradroid and Quazatron. The art is lovely, the game runs perfect and the gameplay is great. So give it a go:
Read more and download Droid Assault here
The game is written using Java, and the programmer behind it is also one of the creators of Lightweight Java Game Library, a powerful open-source library for game development, which solves a lot of the game specific problems related to most other java libraries.
Generic 16 Color Palette
Mattias Gustavsson, May 27, 2009Here's a great thing I came across a while ago:
It is the work of Niklas Jansson, and is his attempt to create a useful generic 16 color palette, with as wide a range of uses as possible.
The result seems very good, and more information, a really interesting discussions and more developed versions can be found at the pixelation forums. Check it out, it's a good read.
Don't look back - Great retro flash game
Mattias Gustavsson, May 26, 2009The talented Terry Cavanagh of Distractionware made this great retro styled flash game a while back:
It's got a very limited color scheme, and the resolution is very low, but it works well for this game, and the gameplay is AWESOME. It's really hard at times, and it requires fast reflexes and a certain amount of stubbornness - though it is great in giving you that "just one more try" feeling.
I'd say it's well worth giving it a try - if you only play one retro-styled flash game ever, make sure it's this one!
You can read more about it, and play it over here.
Iron Plague - FREE graphics for 8-bit game
Mattias Gustavsson, May 25, 2009Though not exactly "News", I think this is still worth bringing to your attention:
The very generous Danc of Lost Garden, have made freely available the complete set of graphics for an unreleased 8-bit space shoot-em-up game.
Read more about it and download it here
This could be a very useful resource for anyone who feel like making a great classic shooter, but don't have the art needed. So let's see what you can make of it!
Fathom - Retro feel in flash
Mattias Gustavsson, May 24, 2009I came across a nice looking, but on the whole a bit weird, flash game by Adam "Atomic" Saltsman, called Fathom:
You can try it at http://adamatomic.com/fathom/
The game have been made with Adam Atomic's own Flixel technology, which is a framework for making pixel-games in flash. Rumor has it that it will be released in the next few weeks: http://flixel.org/
